A number of old houses lie behind the main Ashford Road, some dating back to the 15th and 16th century, some have overhanging storeys.
Charing was once a parish of the Archbishop of Canterbury and seized by Henry VIII and then fell into decay. The remains were later turned into a farmhouse.
The tower of the parish church of St Peter and Paul is nearly 600 years old, and the remainder of the church was rebuilt at the end of the 16th century after a fire. It has fine timbered roof with painted beams and a medieval pulpit.
In the nearby hamlet of Newlands, there is a disused Norman chapel with a 12th century doorway.
