Charfield - Church of St James

Churchend Lane, Charfield GL12 8LJ, England

URPoint Details

The Church of St James (Churches Conservation Trust), stands on a steep hillside, overlooking a valley towards the Cotswold escarpment. Its original structure was substantially rebuilt in the 15th century, when local prosperity from the woollen-cloth trade would have paid for the project. From the 18th century, industry moved to the valley and the church became isolated from the village and escaped later restoration.

It has a pretty saddleback tower, roofs of Cotswold stone and large windows flood the empty church with light. An elegant porch leads to the fine 14th century north door.
