There are two streams flowing along the High Street, one going northwards to the Bristol Channel and the other south to the English Channel.
Chard had been a thriving wool industry for nearly 600 hundred years, but in the 19th century the locals turned to making netting from which machine made lace is produced.
There are several interesting buildings including the 15th century church, the 16th century court house and the 17th century grammar school.
