Castleton

This picturesque village, built entirely of local stone, nestles below the spectacular ruins of the Norman Castle, from which it gets its name. Underground there is an equally attractive and impressive world to be discovered. This is the only area in the world where the attractive, semi-precious Blue John stone is found. There are four caverns, each with its own distinct character illuminated stalagmites, stalactites and other remarkable formations a boat trip along a 200 year old underground canal and a 400 year old village - all this is to be found in Castleton's caverns. Jewellery and ornaments are created in the village from the Blue John stone and sold in the village gift shops.
