Picnics welcome in grounds. Disabled, parking 50m from entrance car park surface difficult impacted gravel path to castle. Easy access to castle bridge and grounds via impacted gravel paths and grass castle itself is not accessible to wheelchair users due to steep steps. Grounds are accessible within curtain walls on impacted gravel and smooth grass some sloped ares seats provided. Toilets in car park. Shop has easy access.
Castle Open daily all year except Monday in winter, Xmas Day and New Years Day.
Norman castle founded in 1138 by William de Albini is approached through gatehouse ruins.
The great keep is one of the largest in England is set within 12 acres of massive defensive earthworks once the palatial home of Queen Isabella who, after arranging for her husband Edward II to be murdered was allowed to retire here.
Climb the steep flights of stone stairs inside the Keep where the views down into the Great Hall and the surrounding countryside are magnificent.
