Known as 'Castle Gloom' this spectacularly sited 15th century fortress was the lowland stronghold of the Campbells.
Situated in a glen, the castle has an eerie feel when the mist settles, but the walk up from the town is well worth while. Stunning views from the parapet walk.
The structure has a fine 14th century square tower joined to a 16th century wing.
In 1645 it was sacked by Montrose and was at one time associated with John Knox and also Mary, Queen of Scots.
