Situated on a peninsula which juts out into the tidal waste of Morecambe Bay where many travellers died trying to beat the tide.
In the centre is a square with tiny cobbled forecourts, an 18th century market cross and, in one corner is a house whose upper floor, supported by pillars projects out over the pavement.
