Situated on the summit ridge of the Cheviots where the main road from Newcastle enters Scotland and divides into two, the right fork descending into Jedburgh and the left fork to Bonchester Bridge and Hawick.
The views from the 1,371ft high Carter Bar is famous and extends towards the Cheviot and the Lowlands with the triple peaks of the Eildon hills to the northwest.
The last Border battle 'The Redeswire Raid' took place here in 1575.
To the east on the crest of the hills near the source of the River Coquet are the notable camp and earthworks of Chew Green.
Here the earliest of the Roman roads into Scotland, the Dere Street of Agricola crosses the border at a height of 1,500ft and then descends towards Oxnam.
