A small Galloway village situated on the Water of Deugh between two ranges of lofty hills, with Cairnsmore of Carsphairn at 2,612ft, to the northeast, Corserine at 2,688ft and Carlins Cairn at 2,650ft to the southwest.

Northwest of the village stands the ruins of Lagwine tower, once belonged to the Macadams.

East of the village is Knockgray Park where a cairn marks the last known spot on which the wild deer of the Lowlands were killed.

A path goes west past the Woodhead lead mines to the shores of Loch Doon and its former island castle to the south of Dalmellington.

Away to the west is Carrick Forest part of the Glen Trool National Forest with the Lochs of Recar and Macaterick in the Galloway hills.
