URPoint Details
The Norsemen left their mark here with ‘Karl’ meaning free man. Carlton grew up in Saxon times as a settlement of freed slaves.
Grey scree near the summit of Carlton Bank is the spoil of jet mines, and the craters and bare patches are from the alum pits.
Packhorses up until the mid 1860s carried the jet to Whitby where it was polished for jewellery. The horses also carried the alum, a mineral used in medicine.
Alum Beck runs through the middle of the village crossed by a pretty ford and little bridges.
