The city’s Celtic name ‘Caer-Luel’ means the town that belonged to the local lord Caer. In Roman times it was called Luguvalium, and the city’s museum is rich in Roman remains.
Throughout its history the town has remained an important agricultural centre and during the 19th century with the expansion of industry Carlisle is now one of the main railway centres of the North.
Victorian Covered Market in Scotch Street boasts a whole host of specialty shops and market stalls. Botchergate one of Carlisle's oldest shopping streets is the place for bargains.
