Carisbrooke Castle, (EH), 1¼m SW of Newport.
Open April to October, daily 10am-6pm. November to March, daily 10am-4pm (closed 24/26 December & 1 January). Admission charge; dogs allowed on leads. Disabled parking 50m from entrance, up steep hill; disabled drivers may park within castle courtyard and disabled passengers may be set down there. Castle: chapel, courtyard (loose gravel), well house and ground floor of museum are accessible to visitors in wheelchairs; easy steps to upper floor of museum with banister; chairs provided in museum and benches in courtyard. Grounds: accessible to wheelchair users except ramparts, mainly on loose gravel paths and lawned grass; benches provided. Special tape tour available; wheel and donkey in well house may be touched; rose garden (note) ramparts lack handrails and safety rails in places and visitors should be accompanied. Tape tour with hearing loop available. Unisex toilet cubicle on level ground within castle. Steep slope to cafe (beside car park), but food and drinks can be brought outside. Shop accessible.
The castle dates from Norman times and is best known as the prison of Charles I in 1647-48. There are some seven acres of castle
