URPoint Details
Carew does not only have a magnificent originally Norman castle, later becoming Tudor and now Elizabethan, but also boasts a fine Tidal Mill and Celtic Cross.
It lies at the head of one of the numerous tidal creeks of Milford Haven, Gerald de Windsor, Constable of Pembroke acquired Carew in 1095 as the dowry of his wife Nest, the ‘Helen of Wales’ ancestress of the FitzGeralds, the FitzStephens and the FitzHenrys.
She was kidnapped from her husband’s arms by Owen ap Cadwgan, son of the prince of Powys and afterwards became wife or mistress of Stephen, Constable of Cardigan and mistress of Henry I.
Sir Rhys ap Thomas built the west side with the great hall, porch tower and entrance stair and gave a celebrated tournament here in 1507.
The north side, with its long-mullioned windows, was reconstructed in the Elizabethan times by Sir John Perrot builder of Laugherne Castle.
