URPoint Details

From the distance the green hangers of the famous airships stand dominating the landscape. It was here the fateful R101 took off in the 1930 for India crashing near Beauvais with a loss of 46 lives. The torn RAF ensign of the R101 is in the Church and the victims are buried in the churchyard across the road.

The Bell pub in Caddington has a photographic gallery depicting the history of Airships.

John Howard, Bedford's famous prison reformer lived in an 18th century house near the green. His work 'State of the Prisons' in 1777 exposed cruel conditions, and a statue commemorating him and his work stands in Bedford.

The hangars have been used as a film set for 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory', 'Batman Returns' and rehearsal space for the British programme 'Take That'.
