URPoint Details
Situated in the Thames Estuary, the island was walled by Cornelius Vermuyden a Dutch Engineer in 1622 to stop it from flooding. The Romans settled in the area in the 1st or 2nd century.
The Lobster Smack Inn is the oldest building on the island and was mentioned in Charles Dickens ‘Great Expectations’
