The village is situated on the east bank of the river Yare approximately halfway between Norwich and Great Yarmouth, and mentioned in the Domesday Book with a population of 140.
There is a legend that a headless horseman rides at midnight from Callow Pit to Cantley Spong, a distance of a mile.
The church of St Margaret was built in 1142 of flint, and has a nave, chancel, south transept and porch, and a square tower. The list of clergy goes back to 1270.
