Surrounding the house are the informal pleasure grounds laid out by Sir Harry Hotspur and his son, Sir Henry, between them about 1770 and 1820. The extensive walled gardens were constructed in 1773 lie to the south-east of the house and are divided into flower garden, physic garden and the kitchen garden. The centre piece is the orangery and gardeners' bothy (built in 1777), also of interest is the dahlia walk and 19th century auricula theatre. Beyond the walled gardens, the pleasure grounds have been fenced to exclude the deer and allow replanting of trees and shrubs.
