The Romans had a pottery here when it stood on the busy Via Julia.
The Normans also built a castle in the late 12th century, but by the 17th century had fallen into decay. It has been restored and medieval banquets and traditional musical entertainment take place within its walls.
The church is Decorated to perpendicular in style with an embattled central tower and a 15th century porch.
