Caister dates back to the 1st century AD when a small settlement was founded by the Romans. The names Ceaster, Castra, Castrre and Chester all refer to the village dating from Anglo-Saxon times.
Late in the 1st century AD a small settlement was founded by the Romans and by the 2nd century a Roman camp or fort had been established on rising ground on the estuary.
Since 1281 beacons and lighthouses have guarded the coastline.
The church of the Holy Trinity dates from the 13th century and was once known as the parish of St Trinity.
