Cairnwell Pass - Braemar

Cairnwell Pass - Braemar

Braemar , Scotland

URPoint Details

The summit of the pass at 2,199ft is the highest main road altitude in Great Britain and is part of the original Wade road linking Coupar Angus with Braemar, first constructed in the mid-18th century by General Caulfield one of General Wade’s successors.

The ‘Devil’s Elbow’ was not part of the original road.

The road over the pass can in winter be blocked by snow and should be checked out before negotiating it.

The Cairnwell rises to 3,059ft to the west and Glas Maol at 3,502ft to the east.

The northerly descent from the summit of the pass gives access through Glen Clunie to Braemar.

A long distance walking track crosses the eastern shoulder of Glas Maol and is known as the Monega Pass, and reaches 3,318ft the highest right-of-way in the country and offers fantastic views to the head of Glen Isla and Kirkton of Glenisla.
