The chief peaks are Cairngorm at 4,084ft, Ben Macdhui at 4,296ft, Braeriach at 4,248ft and Cairn Toul at 4,241ft.

The group is crossed by the Lairig Ghru a desolate pass from Rothiemurchus to Braemar.

Loch Avon and Loch Etchachan lie high up on the slopes of Cairngorm and Ben Macdhui respectively.
