A mountain group named from one of its summits in the central Highlands giving name to the beautiful brown or yellow rock crystal found here.
The chief peaks are Cairngorm at 4,084ft, Ben Macdhui at 4,296ft, Braeriach at 4,248ft and Cairn Toul at 4,241ft.
The group is crossed by the Lairig Ghru a desolate pass from Rothiemurchus to Braemar.
Loch Avon and Loch Etchachan lie high up on the slopes of Cairngorm and Ben Macdhui respectively.
