Once the stronghold of the powerful Butler family, Cahir Castle is one of Ireland’s largest and best-preserved castles situated on a rocky island on the River Suir.

Cahir (Clathair), means 'Stone Fort' and Conor O'Brien, the Lord of Thomond, built this strong and imposing castle on the stony Outcrop Island in the River Suir. It is likely that some of the original castle has been incorporated in the later Anglo Norman Castle built in the 15/16th century. The castle represents the pinnacle of medieval masonry skills and craftsmanship. Nearby, also on the bank of the river is Cahir Abbey a Canons Regular foundation dating to the reign of King John. The town has a delightfully designed Square attributed to the Earl of Glengall a fine church and school buildings. There is a well signposted walk taking in many of the towns features
