URPoint Details

The Castle, built by Edward I stands overlooking the Menai Strait and dates from 1283.

The old town shelters behind the walls of the castle and has a maze of narrow streets, and where the 14th century church of St Mary’s blends in with the old and fascinating houses.

The Roman remains of Segontium fort date back to AD75 and the museum is well worth a visit and its quite eerie walking around the ruins. Nearby in South Street is a smaller fort which is older than the Segontium fort.

Llanbeblig Church dates back to the 13th century and is dedicated to St Peblig who was supposedly the uncle of the Roman Emperor Constantine. The tower has stepped battlements, a fine oak roof and a 16th century altar tomb.

In 1963 Queen Elizabeth II made Caernarfon a Royal Borough.
