Bury St Edmunds - St Edmundsbury Cathedral

Bury St Edmunds - St Edmundsbury Cathedral

Angel Hill, Bury St Edmunds IP33 1LS, England

URPoint Details

In 2009 the Cathedral changed its dedication to become the Cathedral Church of St James and St Edmund. The remains of St Edmund patron saint of England, were brought to the local monastery 33 years after his death at the hands of the Danes in AD 870. From the early 11th century the town was known as St Edmundsbury, and the monastery attained Abbey status in 1032.The Abbey is one of the greatest churches in the country and what remains is only a little of the original abbey but gives an idea of its former grandeur.

The Norman Gate is mid 1100's, Abbey Gate mid 1400's and the Norman Tower are all interesting contrasts to the Tudor, Georgian and Victorian houses built into the ruins of west front of the abbey.  St James Church, south of the Norman gate is now the cathedral church. Built in the 16th century has some 19th century additions.
