A large village with many attractive buildings and has an interesting historical claim to fame, that of Hereward the Wake came here to defend against the Norman’s.
Behind the church are the remains of the 12th century Burwell Castle, where the outlawed rebel Earl of Essex, Geoffrey de Mandeville, attacked Queen Matilda's forces and was killed here in 1144. His corpse was ex-communicated and remained unburied for years until the pope was satisfied that his sons had made reparation for his sins.
