Burton Agnes Hall, (EH)

Burton Agnes

URPoint Details

Dogs on leads only.

Burton Agnes Hall was built between 1598 and 1610, with the latter date carved above the double door of the splendid gatehouse.

Anne Griffiths, daughter of Sir Henry Griffith who built the house, died and was buried in the church near by, shortly after the house had been completed, despite her dying wish that her skull should be kept in the home she loved. In revenge it is said, she haunted the graceful room and galleries until her skull was disinterred and put in an unrevealed place in the hall.

The hall is said to be of the least altered Elizabethan country house.

A vast Long Gallery occupies the whole of the top floor, and there is a fine collection of Impressionist paintings including works by Gaugin, Cezanne, Corot and Matisse.
The hall has many elegant bow and bay windows.
