Lord Burghley, Chief Minister to Queen Elizabeth I built the house between 1565 and 1587.
The House is the largest and grandest of the Elizabethan Age and has been home to the Cecil family ever since.

Guided tours take visitors from the spectacular kitchens through 18 splendid rooms culminating in the famous state apartments with magnificent ceilings painted by Verrio.
The rooms contain a treasure trove of fine paintings, furniture, silver fireplaces, porcelain and tapestries.

Extensive landscaped gardens and parkland designed by Capability Brown is famous for the International Horse trials.
