The church of St Mary dates from about 1200 and was drastically restored in 1880.
Its great length in proportion to its width is because the nave and chancel are under one continuous roof, which is thatched with local reeds. The strange looking ‘stepped tower’, a local landmark for river traffic, was built about 1790 onto an older base.
