The castle built in AD 300, and still shows Roman mortar in the walls, massive walls and the round bastions give some idea of the strength of the original building.
It was one of a chain of fortresses guarding the East Coast. Later the Norman's used it as a castle again.
The great beam in the Village Institute has an inscription carved in 1548.
Opposite the castle across the River Yare is the 'Berney Arms' windmill, which used to grind the 'clinker' to make cement up until the 1950's.
