Buckingham dates back to Saxon times when it became the county town of Buckinghamshire, a status it later lost to Aylesbury during the reign of Henry VIII.
The town, extending along the banks of the Ouse, contains many old and interesting buildings in its busy centre although the parish church, with its fine stone spire, stands a little apart on the motte of the former castle.

Buckingham has a large number of 18th century houses built following a fire which had destroyed many of the town's earlier buildings. One unusual building, also of the 18th century, is the gaol erected by Lord Cobham and another is the manor house with its rare twisted chimney.Buckingham is particularly noted for its University which has occupied several important buildings over the last few years and it is noticeable that the work carried out by the University on these buildings has greatly improved the appearance of the town.
