Benedictine monks spent 30 years building the cathedral sized abbey just north of the village. The monks sell their famous wine, stained glass and honey which are now sold worldwide.
The village lies in a narrow combe between steep cliffs.
When Squire Cabell of Brook Manor an evil man and thought to be a vampire, died in 1677 the villagers buried him him with a heavy stone on his head in a solid tomb inside a building with an iron grille, which can still be seen in the churchyard
