The village lies within Dartmoor National Park and has an interesting museum the House of Shells which has exhibits from all over the world.
Buckfast Abbey was built between 1908 and 1933 by small teams of French Benedictine monks. The abbey stands on the site of the original medieval monastery, which was replaced in 1806 by a Gothic mansion and which was later included in the present abbey.
