The town is also the gateway to Ulpha Fell. 4miles north, the steep S-bend, turning off northwest at the Travellers Rest Inn, leads to a wonderful high mountain plateau with walks over Birker Fell and Ulpha Fell and views northward to the highest lakeland peak, Scafell Pike.
