Brougham Castle, (EH), 1½m SE of Penrith on a minor road off A66. Open 1 April to end September, daily 10am-6pm. October, daily 10am-4pm. Small admission charge; parking; suitable for picnics; wheelchair access to keep; dogs on leads allowed.
These impressive ruins on the bank of the River Eamont include an early 13th century keep and later buildings. You can climb to the top of the keep and survey the domain of its eccentric one-time owner Lady Anne Clifford, who restored the castle in the 17th century. There is a small exhibition of Roman tombstones from the nearby fort.
