Brough Castle, (EH), 8m SE of Appleby, S of A66. Open any reasonable time; parking; dogs on leads only.
Perched on a superb vantage point overlooking an old trade route, now the A66, this ancient site dates back to Roman times. The 12th century keep replaced an earlier stronghold destroyed by the Scots in 1174. The castle was restored by Lady Anne Clifford in the 17th century.
