The place-name 'Britford' is first attested in a Saxon charter of circa 670, where it appears as Brytfordingea. It appears as Bretford and Bredford in the Domesday Book of 1086, and as Brideford in the Curia Regis Rolls of 1203. The name means 'brides' ford'
A village in the Avon water-meadows with views of the spire of Salisbury Cathedral, with charming old houses including 18th century Bridge Farm and The Moat which is partly Georgian.
To the southeast is Longford Castle a largely 16th century and built in a triangular pattern.
The church has remarkable Saxon arches, the pulpit is Jacobean and the altar tomb in the chancel is interesting.
