URPoint Details
Brimpton stands in the South of the Kennet valley high on the downs and on the Roman road from Speen to Silchester. It is said that there was a Roman masonry in the former church but the building we see today is largely of 1872, although the tower is of 1748, brick-built and faced with flint. Of interest at Manor Farm is an outbuilding that was formerly the Chapel of St. Leonards which was used by the Knights Templar - their Maltese cross can be seen over a doorway. Also in the parish is Shalford Farm which dates from 1562 and was used by the Knights Hospitaller. Of historic interest, too, is the mill which dates from 1731 and was probably the mill mentioned in the Domesday Book.
