URPoint Details
The town sits beside the River Parret and is a reminder that Bridgwater was once a busy port and on the waterfront the Water Gate is all that remains of a 13th century castle.
There are some fine Georgian houses in Castle Street built by the Duke of Chandos in about 1720.
The church built in the 14th century is dedicated to St Mary and it was here during the Civil War that the rebel Duke of Monmouth in 1685 surveyed Sedgemoor before the battle. The church has a 175ft spire and a fine Jacobean wooden screen.
