URPoint Details
Seen across the Severn, the Gothic tower of St Leonard’s Church, (Churches Conservation Trust) frames at one end and the outline of Bridgnorth’s High Town, with the classical tower of St Mary’s now the parish church at the other.
The church is massive and mellow and sits in its churchyard, surrounded by an oval of charming buildings. In the Civil War a great fire swept through High Town and the medieval church was mostly destroyed. The 17th century nave roof was installed after the restoration, but by the early 19th century it fell into disrepair. The chancel was restored in 1846 and the western parts between 1860 and 1861 by W Slater, and later a north aisle was added making the church now as wide as it is long.
