Situated amid the lofty hills and moors in Glen Cairn where the Braemar and Ballater roads meet in the Dee Valley.
To the northeast beyond Glen Finzie rises Morven at 2,862ft, and farther on over the hills along the narrow and steep Glas Choille section rises to over 1,800ft and can blocked in winter by snow, leads down to the fertile valley of the Don near Cock Bridge.
