URPoint Details
The town grew up in the late 12th century, as a stopping place for pilgrims on their way to Canterbury. It later developed as a staging post with good inns. Spacious areas of rural countryside and parkland surround the town. The ruins of the St Thomas Chapel stand in the High St. and the new Church of St Thomas was built in the 1880s in the Gothic style.
