URPoint Details
More than 500 square miles of wild mountainous country, stretching from the Black Mountains in the west and in 1957 were designated as the Brecon Beacons National Park.
From the highest of the red sandstone peaks, Pen-y-fan (2,906ft) and Corn-Du (2,863ft) there are wonderful views northwards over the bleak plateau of Mynydd Eppynt and westwards to the rugged grandeur of the Black Mountains.
The Beacons are so called because in the days before telecommunications, they formed part of a chain of prominent hilltops on which beacon fires were lit to give warning of important events.
