URPoint Details
The town built mainly of flint lies in the North West corner of the county almost on the Norfolk border and situated on the Little Ouse river.
The ‘Five Bells’ on Market Hill, has good bar meals, lovely restaurant and a nice patio outside.
The town was used as gun flint centre and employed over 200 Flint knappers during the Napoleonic wars.
A skilled knapper could produce 300 gun flints per hour and there were many ‘knapping’ families. The work was not only dangerous but if the fine silica dust was inhaled it killed off many of them, due to the bad ventilation.
