URPoint Details
The town was used as a gun flint centre and employed over 200 Flint knappers during the Napoleonic wars.
A skilled knapper could produce 300 gun flints per hour and there were many ‘knapping’ families.
The work was not only dangerous but if the fine silica dust was inhaled it killed off many of them, due to the bad ventilation.
