URPoint Details
A delightful sandstone town near a tributary of the River Irthing.
The church was built in 1874 by the Earl of Carlisle. The ruins of the original Norman church, built on a site of a Roman fort, are a mile to the west.
A quarry near the River Gelt, 2 miles southwest, still bears inscriptions scratched by Roman workmen.
