The Earl of Mar built this lovely L-shaped design turreted stronghold in 1628 with a central round tower and spiral stair, barrel vaulted ceilings, massive iron gate (yett) and underground still remain intact.
The castle was burned in 1689 by the Black Colonel (John Farquharson of Inverey), repaired by the Government after the 1745 Rising.
In 1732, the castle bought by the Farquharsons of Invercauld altered it into a private residence.
