A Deeside village 1100ft up in the Highlands, and set among heather carpeted hills and dominated to the west by the massive Cairn Toul (4241ft).
In 1715, the 6th Earl of Mar raised the Jacobite standard on a mount where the Invercauld Arms now stands.
Devil's Elbow about 10 miles south is a high pass with a hairpin bend on the road running between Cairnwell and Glas Maol, joining Glen Beg and Glen Clunie.
