Brading - Isle of Wight

Brading

URPoint Details

Once a harbour and as recently as the 1870s, small ships sailed up the Yar at high tide. Since 1880 a mile-long causeway has cut off the sea from the town, adding 650 acres of valuable flat marshland for the many types of birds that call this home.

The 12th century church is noted for the wooden monuments to the Oglander family who still live at nearby Nunwell House and have done so since 1607.

The village stocks and whipping post are kept in the old town hall, along with the old bear-baiting ring.
