The church has a most unusual feature in that under the altar lies Nicholas Saunderson buried in 1739. He was a blind scholar with such a wonderful brain and so very knowledgable that George II made him a Doctor of Law. Lord Chesterfield is stated to have said about Saunderson that although he had lost the sight of his eyes he taught others to use theirs.
