URPoint Details

A charming spot where the Anglo-Saxon settlement of ‘the ford by the box trees’ is downhill from any direction.

All the roads twist sharply until they reach the gorgeous cottages in pale pink, off-white and soft green and houses of red-brick Georgian facades.

Butcher’s Lane, which runs off Broad Street, is lined by colour-washed timber-framed houses with overhanging upper floors and ancient bowed roofs, some dating back to the 15th century.

In the Church of The Holy Trinity is a very poignant brass to David Byrde, son of the rector who died in infancy in 1606. It shows him in his cot with his shoes below.
Another memorial records the fate of Elizabeth Hyam, four times widowed, and who after a fall ‘was at last hastened to her end in her 113th year’
